MANTRA FOR SCORPION STING? 9
DR R.D. LELE
And now let me come to a few anecdotes relating to my
practice. For last twenty years I have been working in a most modern hospital
in India but I began my career as a doctor in 1950 prior to leaving for England
for my post-graduate training in 1955. Once a 25-year old Muslim lady to me
with the complaint 'bister chubta hai' (my bed pricks) Very naively I said:
"If the bed pricks you, change the bed!". The mid-wife who was
standing by suppressed her smile and explained to me that the modest lady
wished to convey that she experienced pain during sexual intercourse. This
terminology was outside my text book on medicine. Patients and doctors are both
uncomfortable in discussing sexual problems, especially women patients. They
may complain of low back pain and hope you will understand its reason. Male
patients are also reticent and hesitant in stating their problem clearly. They
hope that the doctor will understand what they mean by 'weakness' and do the
needful to help them. Today's society is more open and many doctors have
specialised in sexology, so that patients, both male and female can come out with
their sexual problems more openly. Since patients are vulnerable and gullible
in this area, there is a lot of exploitation by unscrupulous people.
