DR A.V. BAVDEKAR
Mirza is a great comedian both on stage and on the celluloid screen. His appearance and style of talking can make one laugh and forget one's problems, at least temporarily.
A few years ago, Mirza fell sick. He was having backache and continuous temperature. I got him investigated and the final diagnosis was a type of lymphoma—known as Hodgkin's Disease.
I talked to him about the nature of his illness and the line of treatment (chemotherapy). He refused to take the treatment and just disappeared from the scene. He left Bombay and has been staying in some moffusil place. He had not taken any chemotherapy, but is well and healthy for the last ten years. I meet him occasionally. I never asked him what treatment he is taking and he has never told me. Did he have spontaneous remission? Did he resort to any other 'pathy' or alternate systems of medicine? Is he cured of his disease? I do not know for certain. Yet I am glad that he is doing well and I wish him good luck.
